I did this after reading a book review for a portrait-book about the whole Ganguro trend that was in Japan a while back. I found some of the information given about these garish-looking girls to be terribly sad.
For example: "15 years old. High school dropout. At home is her 15-month-old son. But he has no father. She doesn't return home much."
This got me thinking about why those girls dressed the way they did, what backgrounds they had and what those people, under all that makeup, were actually facing in their lives. I found myself wondering about their home situations and the link between that and their odd choice in fashion. I wanted to know what they were hiding.
The cover of the book fueled this curiosity the most, though [and was the primary reference for this piece]; a stern, tired looking girl who honestly looked jaded. 'Jaded' has never been a word I've associated with the neon-monsters of Ganguro.
TL;DR: a piece looking into the shitty lives many Ganguro seem to have had.
methinks scales needs to art-wank more often, that's one of the most interesting descriptions I've read in like...forever.
Onto the piece!
It's fantastic, of course. I expect nothing less than the highest quality from you by now, scales ; ) Her expression really IS jaded, and I like the explosion of colour (is white a colour?) at her lips. It's really garish, really striking, like the fashion in general. Your colour work is to die for and I actually find her eyes kind of...creepily real? Seriously, man, they look so...human D: freaky shit.
this picture is emmotive, so very well detailed and full of amazing win! Add the interesting description you've give it as well as the backstory and it becomes even greater!
